Phillips Machine Service has grown to be one of the largest full service companies of its type in the world. Since Phillips began operation in 1976, the company has set the pace for equipment service and support. Today Phillips is an OEM and is involved in almost all phases of mining equipment, including rebuilding continuous miners, roof bolters, scoops and feeder breakers; remanufacture of shuttle cars; repair and remanufacturing of cutter drums; as well as the sale of used equipment.

The success of Phillips Machine is largely due to a philosophy that was initiated more than three decades ago: “To utilize the most skilled people in the industry; provide a safe working environment; and provide the best possible machine/components at the most cost efficient price.” Our customers rely on Phillips’ complete precision machine shop, our welding and fabrication facility and our component exchange program to keep their machinery operating cost effectively.

OEM PRODUCTS

When Phillips rolled out the Freedom® Car family of Shuttle Coal Haulers it was obvious they would set a new standard for quality and performance. These machines have evolved and are now available in battery, cable and the diesel-electric version that was introduced at MINExpo 2008. The heavy-duty construction of the frames, coupled with state of the art traction control, enables payloads of up to 30 metric tons. Each unit features a high capacity chassis along with a large operator compartment designed for optimum visibility and operator safety. The newest addition to the Freedom® Car family is a high capacity cable car. This new model is built for applications requiring the shuttle car to have an elevating discharge conveyor boom. It incorporates this elevating boom construction without reducing the capacity increases that have made the product line so successful.

Phillips Machine has increased its production facilities with an additional 12,000 square feet of new shop space at the Beckley, WV location, and also opened a new 18,000 sq. ft. facility in Delta, CO to better serve our Midwest and Western customers. In 2008, Phillips expanded to South Africa with the opening of our sales office. A 9,000 sq. ft. manufacturing and repair facility there followed. By fall of 2011, the shop space in South Africa will be doubled, allowing for even more work volume. Effective on February 23, 2011, Phillips also acquired The Combs Group. Formerly owned and operated by John and Susan Combs, The Combs Group specializes in rebuilding underground mining machinery, associated part sales, machining, fabrication, hydraulics and chrome plating.  Phillips will retain The Combs Group as an operating subsidiary with its current offices and shops in Middlesboro, KY and Harrogate, TN.

Today Phillips continues to lead in the pursuit of excellence in new and innovative services for underground and highwall mining operations and in a wide range of product services. With its original small company philosophy of providing unique personal service, Phillips Machine Service has grown to be an industry leader in all areas of operation.
